Does blasting the A/C on high immediately upon starting a car cause it harm?
I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier that's been very reliable. It gets great gas mileage and I want to keep it til the wheels fall off. My boyfriend doesn't believe that immediately blasting the A/C after starting the engine could stress the engine. I definitely hear the engine rev up when he does this and have told him not to leave the A/C on when he turns the engine off, and to wait until the RPM's level off before turning the A/C onto a moderate level. He likes to immediately blast the A/C and fan on full force on extremely hot days and it makes me worry. Am I worried for nothing? Please tell me your opinion on this.
Doing that requires the engine to immediately raise the RPM (speed) above its normal warm-up idle in order to power the A/C, when it has only just started - meaning before the engine has properly warmed up at all.
Cars are best warmed up after not being driven for several hours by being gently driven (below 2000rpm with smooth acceleration) for a few miles.
When you start the A/C after warming the engine up, its totally fine, because the motor oil has reached all parts of the engine and is circulating as it should.
It won't hurt anything at all if you only do it every once in a while, but doing it every day can potentially add (very, VERY slight... but brand new cars can have engine failures) unnecessary wear on your engine's bearings and moving parts.
Right after a cold start, oil has not flowed through the engine completely, and will not do so until it is at proper operating temperature - motor oil lubricates the entire engine and vastly reduces wear on all of its many, MANY moving parts. This is why checking and changing engine oil regularly is so highly stressed to all car owners.
It is part of the same reason that you should never rev your engine or drive too hard before it has properly warmed (especially in winter) - just to a much, much, MUCH smaller extent.
On local roads (below 50mph), I personally don't use my A/C at all unless its above 90 degrees or extremely humid out.
